Prison Warden Dies in Freak Gun Accident at Hola Prison

On September 16, 2019, a tragic incident occurred at Hola prison in Tana River County, resulting in the accidental shooting death of a prison warden.

According to Tana River County Police Commander Fredrick Ochieng, the incident took place at approximately 7:00 am when the victim was shot in the belly by his colleague, who was performing safety precautions on his firearm.

The officer's gun accidentally discharged one bullet, severely injuring his colleague. The victim was rushed to Hola referral hospital but was later referred to Malindi Sub County Hospital in Kilifi County, where he died upon arrival.

Commander Ochieng stated that the body is currently lying at Malindi Sub County hospital mortuary, awaiting postmortem.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with no known conflict between the two officers to trigger such an action.

Other prison officers, upon hearing the gunshot, rushed to the scene and found their colleague in a pool of blood.

Confirming the incident, Commander Ochieng said, 'He was found in a pool of blood.'
