On September 16, 2019, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) made a significant decision regarding the Kibra Parliamentary seat by-election.
IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati announced that football star McDonald Mariga had been cleared to vie for the seat on a Jubilee Party ticket.
Mariga had initially been disqualified from the by-election, scheduled for November 7, 2019, due to concerns over his voter registration status.
However, Mariga successfully appealed the IEBC decision, with the commission stating that he was indeed a registered voter.
According to Chebukati, the IEBC decision to decline Mariga's nomination on September 10, 2019, was 'improper, null and void.'
As a result, the IEBC ordered the processing of Mariga's application for nomination as the Jubilee Party's candidate for the Kibra constituency by-election.
