Published on September 16, 2019, Senator Irungu Khangata has become the latest Jubilee leader to abandon their Kibra candidate, McDonald Mariga. The Muranga Senator has thrown his weight behind ODM candidate Imran Okoth, citing his exemplary performance in managing the constituency's CDF while Ken Okoth was receiving treatment abroad.
Senator Khangata, a lawyer, stated that Imran is best suited to succeed his brother Ken. He expressed his sympathies for Imran, saying, 'For me, my sympathies are with Imran in the Kibra by-election. Ken Okoth was my personal friend. I would wish to see his brother thrive…I treasure friendships and loyalties,' during Citizen TV's Day Break.
Regarding Mariga, who has been locked out for allegedly missing in the voter registry, Senator Khangata argued that the fact that he has a voter's card is proof that he is eligible to vie. He said, 'As for me, when you look at the constitution, it appears that he has a fairly strong case because the constitution speaks of being a registered voter. Once you receive a document that acknowledges that you have been registered, that for me is sufficient for you to be deemed as a voter.'
However, the IEBC cleared Mariga to contest for the seat on Monday, stating that he is a duly registered voter and should be allowed to participate in the November 7th polls.
