Manchester United's David De Gea is facing a stern warning from retired goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar, who has told the current number one that he is not irreplaceable.

De Gea's contract at Old Trafford is set to expire on January 1, and he has yet to commit to extending his stay with the club.

Van Der Sar, now the chief executive of Ajax, made the comments in an interview with Skysports, where he stated, "The decision needs to come at a point. It takes a long time now, so it's a case of yes or no, but I'm not a director of United."

"The decision needs to come at a point. It takes a long time now, so its a case of yes or no, but I'm not a director of United," the ex-United keeper told Skysports.

Van Der Sar's words are likely to have hit home harder for De Gea, given their shared history at Manchester United. Van Der Sar was the predecessor to De Gea as the club's number one goalkeeper.

De Gea has come under heavy criticism this season, particularly after Van Anholt's near-post goal and Southampton's Jannik Vestergaard header. The Spaniard has struggled with consistency, making basic errors that have ultimately punished him.

Van Der Sar's comments are not the only warning De Gea has received. Other goalkeepers, including those in the Premier League, are reportedly being considered as potential replacements for De Gea.

Manchester United are rumored to be trying to lure Van Der Sar back to the club, but the former Dutch international is headstrong on staying at Ajax and making the club Europe's top team.

Van Der Sar has stated, "I am enjoying my time at Ajax I've got a different role - chief executive. I am really looking forward to bringing Ajax back to the European top level - that we probably touched last year - and to make sure we get the best opportunity to stay there."
