Phrases that Define Campus Life in Kenya

From missing classes to partying, Kenyan campuses have their own set of phrases that have become an integral part of student life. Published on September 13, 2019, these phrases are a reflection of the challenges and experiences that students face.

One of the most common phrases is 'Nitumie pdf,' which is used by students who have a tendency of missing classes only to run helter-skelter when exams are around the corner.

Another popular phrase is 'Nisignie attendance,' which is used when students wake up with a hangover and can't muster the strength to attend class. In such cases, they call their friends to sign the attendance sheet on their behalf.

Other phrases include 'Class/Cat imebounce,' which is the second-best news for a campus student after a Mpesa message, and 'Class/Cat iko wapi,' which is used by clueless students who never know where classes are, when, or where exams are being held.

These phrases are not only limited to academic life but also extend to social interactions. For instance, 'Pigwa exile' is used when a student is exiled from their room by their roommate because they have a hot date.

Additionally, phrases like 'Supp inafanywa lini?' and 'Group yenu imejaa?' are used by students who have to do a supplementary exam after failing the original one and those who are never in class when groups are being created, respectively.

Other common phrases include 'Uko na mwakenya?' which is used by students who never studied or when the lecturer brings an exam created from a topic one is not familiar with, and 'Ati uliniambia hii sem tunafanyanga unit ngapi?' which is the most asked question by team clueless.

Lastly, phrases like 'Password ya WiFi,' 'Nipigie picha notes,' and 'Lec amefika?' are used by students who want to use their bundles in tough economic times, those who want to keep up with school work without having to cough up money to print notes, and latecomers, respectively.
