Published on September 13, 2019, Jumia Kenya has taken significant steps to combat online fraud by intensifying the vetting of vendors on its platform.

According to Sam Chappate, the Managing Director of Jumia Kenya, the company aims to increase transparency on the e-commerce site by providing customers with a history of vendors.

This move is crucial in ensuring quality assurance in online trading, particularly in cases where customers have limited options for redress, especially when the value of products bought is low.

Speaking during the launch of Jumia Mall, a virtual marketplace, Chappate emphasized the importance of vetting and verifying products listed on the site to boost customers' online shopping experience.

The Communications Authority of Kenya has clarified that online trading platforms, such as Jumia, do not fall under the Kenya Information and Communications Act and are therefore not licensable.

As a result, consumers do not enjoy the same level of protection under the Consumer Protection Regulations, 2010, which applies only to services offered by licensed authorities.

However, stakeholders have welcomed the move, citing its potential to safeguard the quality of products and eliminate fraudsters who prey on unsuspecting shoppers.
