NSE Turnover Slumps by Sh644 Million Amidst Investor Caution

On September 12, 2019, the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) experienced a substantial decline in market turnover, shedding a massive Sh644 million from the previous trading session.

Market turnover for the day stood at Sh103 million, a significant drop from the Sh747 million traded on the previous day.

Despite the downturn, the NSE saw a marginal increase in market capitalization, rising to Sh2.16 trillion from Sh2.15 trillion the previous day.

Market indicators also performed well, with all indices finishing in the green zone. The All Share Index (NASI) edged up 0.51 points to 143.98, while the NSE 20 Share Index rose 4.89 points to 2442.04.

The NSE 25 Share index added 12.68 points to settle at 3446.56. The Bond market saw a decline in transactions, with bonds worth Sh1.3 billion traded, down from Sh1.4 billion the previous day.

On the derivatives market, two Safaricom contracts expiring on December 19 worth Sh54,000 were concluded at a price of Sh27.

Among the sectors, the Banking sector had shares worth Sh36 million transacted, accounting for 35.02% of the day's traded value. Equity Group Holdings moved 600,000 shares valued at Sh22.8 million, while Standard Chartered Bank remained unchanged at Sh195.00.

The Insurance sector saw shares worth Sh8.3 million traded, accounting for 8.06% of the day's traded value. Jubilee Holdings closed 1.37% higher to Sh370.00, moving 7.5 million shares valued at Sh7.5 million.

The Manufacturing and Allied sector had shares worth Sh22.9 million traded, accounting for 22.06% of the day's traded value. E.A Breweries exchanged 100,000 shares worth Sh19.8 million, while B.A.T moved 6,000 shares valued at Sh3 million.

Safaricom had 1.1 million shares valued at Sh31 million transacted, representing 30.47% of the day's traded value.
