Published on September 13, 2019, a motion to impeach Kakamega County Assembly Speaker Morris Buluma was tabled in the assembly on September 5 by Khalaba ward rep Boniface Osanga.

The motion, which accused the speaker of blocking debate on the Auditor General's reports, serving the interests of the executive, and absenteeism, was set to be debated on September 10.

However, the debate was scuttled after the mover of the motion and minority ward reps affiliated to Amani National Congress, Jubilee, and Ford Kenya parties failed to turn up, citing a meeting with Governor Wycliffe Oparanya.

The meeting, held at Bishop Nicholas Stam Pastoral Centre, was called after the minority ward reps protested that the governor had only met Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ward reps, who form the majority in the assembly.

After the meeting, the minority ward reps went quiet, and the impeachment motion was dropped.

Speaker Buluma had earlier defended himself against the allegations, vowing to resist pressure to step aside.

However, Governor Oparanya's intervention saved the speaker from being impeached, marking the second time the governor had stepped in to save his ally.
