September 12, 2019 - Moi Girls High School Kamusinga, the reigning East African handball champions, have started training in preparation for the inaugural World High School Games in Hong Kong, China.
The school, based in Kimilili constituency in Bungoma County, defeated Kirandich in the East African final in Tanzania to win their fourth regional title.
Under the guidance of coach Godfrey Simiyu, Moi Girls have won the East African championship four times and have eight national titles, solidifying their position as regional titans of the sport.
Principal Dr. Josephine Wamalwa attributed the team's success to hard work, prayers, and 'total discipline' from the players.
'The girls are training hard to get victory when they represent Africa in China,' Dr. Wamalwa said. 'I'm confident we will retain the East African title next year as only three players are candidates while the rest are in form two, three, and one.'
Dr. Wamalwa also expressed gratitude to the school board for supporting the team by providing uniforms, equipment, and taking them to various tournaments for exposure.
She noted that many of the players come from humble backgrounds and that the school's agricultural ventures have helped support them.
Team captain Darvin Kwanusia credited the team's success to hard work, discipline, and support from the school.
'We had lost at the national level but when we came back, we embarked on a thorough training and we went and brought the trophy home,' Kwanusia said.
She also requested the Minister of Sports, Amina Mohamed, to help set up an academy of handball in Kimilili to nurture the many talents in the area.
