Kenya: Kieleweke Faction Respects Church Ban on Politics ¶
Members of the Jubilee Party's Kieleweke faction have agreed to respect a ban on political activities in churches, following a directive by the Catholic Church and the Anglican Church of Kenya.
According to David Murathe, the party's former vice chair, all politicians in the grouping have been asked to adhere to the directive, which was announced on Monday by Catholic Diocese of Muranga Bishop James Maria Wainaina.
The ban, which targets Catholic churches in Murang'a and Kirinyaga, will be in force until further notice. It follows an incident at Gitui Catholic Church, where Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro clashed with his nominated counterpart Maina Kamanda over who could invite guests.
While condemning the incident, Mr Murathe said Kieleweke members were supportive of the directive and were ready to adhere to it. He also expressed hope that Tangatanga members would heed the instructions.
Mr Murathe's sentiments seemed to target Deputy President William Ruto, who has been generous with churches, presiding over many fundraisers and giving large amounts of money.
The ban came three months after the Anglican Church of Kenya's Murang'a South diocese banned political fundraisers, following a clash between Kieleweke faction members and Kandara MP Alice Wahome's supporters.
