On September 11, 2019, Valencia made a shocking move by firing coach Marcelino Garcia Toral, just three matches into the La Liga season.

The decision came after a disappointing start to the campaign, with Valencia winning one match, losing one, and drawing another, leaving them 10th in the table.

Marcelino, who took over in May 2017, led the club to fourth-place finishes in his two seasons in charge and also guided them to victory in the Spanish Cup last season.

"Valencia CF has communicated this Wednesday to Marcelino Garcia Toral the termination of his role as coach of the first team," the club stated.

"The club would like to thank him for his work and dedication during his time with our club and wish him the greatest success for the future," the statement added.

Valencia will face Barcelona away on Saturday, and the club has not yet named a replacement for Marcelino, although local media reported that Albert Celades, former boss of Spain's under-16 and under-18 teams, is the likely choice.
