As the city of Dar es Salaam grapples with rising crime rates, a Tanzanian official has proposed an unconventional solution: allowing pastors to preach to patrons at nightclubs.
Paul Makonda, the regional commissioner of Dar es Salaam, made the suggestion during a church service in the Kawe area on September 8, 2019.
"Wachungaji ambao wangependa kuhubiri katika vilabu na maeneo ya burudani wana uhuru wa kufanya hivyo, ili kuwalisha wananchi neno la Mungu. Wasije wakasema baadaye hawakukujua, wafuateni huko," he said.
According to Makonda, the pastors would be allowed to preach for about 30 minutes in the nightclubs, starting from the next week.
However, this is not the first time Makonda has made a controversial statement. Last month, he suggested that the names of men who have been involved in prostitution be published on the government's website to warn women against them.
