Residents of Icaweri and Ng'enda in Gatundu South took to the streets on Tuesday to protest over rising insecurity in the area.

According to reports, a young man identified as George Kagua was murdered the previous night just metres from President Uhuru Kenyatta's ancestral home.

The residents, who have had to endure criminal attacks in the past month, lit fires and blocked the roads before they were dispersed by the police.

They demanded better security, citing a recent gang attack on George Kibe's home, which left his son dead, the family dog dead, and three other family members badly injured.

Just last year, the National Police Service issued a stern warning over claims that there were efforts to revive criminal gangs in Murang'a County.

According to them, certain individuals were seeking to further their selfish personal interests.

One such case was the killing of a 15-year-old boy in Murang'a County, whose postmortem examination revealed that he died after being hit several times on the head with a blunt object.

Local MP, Kandara, has alleged that illegal gangs such as Mungiki, 42 brothers, Usiku Sacco, and Gaza are recruiting newly circumcised men and 'punishing' those who refuse to join them.
