On September 10, 2019, Kirinyaga County rejected the Punguza Mizigo bill, a move that has sparked tensions between the county government and the bill's proponents.
According to Governor Anne Waiguru, the county will wait and ensure that any proposed amendments to the constitution aim to empower its residents.
Waiguru expressed her satisfaction with the county assembly's decision to reject the bill, stating that it had no benefits for the county's residents, particularly women.
She emphasized that the county will not be swayed by personal interests, saying, "We will wait and ensure that any proposed amendments to the constitution aim to empower our residents. Therefore, we will not be deterred by personal interests."
Waiguru also praised the county assembly for thoroughly examining the bill before making a decision, saying, "We are pleased that the county assembly members studied and understood the bill before making a decision to reject it, as it had no benefits for the residents of Kirinyaga County."
Earlier, the Thirdway Alliance party had faced challenges in pushing the bill through some county assemblies.
It is worth noting that the Punguza Mizigo bill has been met with resistance from various counties, including Pokot Magharibi, which rejected it last month.
