McDonald Mariga's chances of contesting the Kibra seat in the November 7 by-election have been dealt a significant blow after he failed to find his name in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) register of voters.
On Tuesday, September 10, 2019, IEBC returning officer Beatrice made the announcement after Mariga visited the electoral body's offices to formalise his candidature.
"I cannot find Mr. Mariga's name in our register," she said.
As a legal requirement, any aspirant in Kenya must be a registered voter.
Mariga had earlier received his nomination certificate from the ruling Jubilee Party, but his bid now hangs in the balance.
He and the Jubilee Party have until Sunday to seek arbitration after officials disputed the commission's decision.
