National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called for increased infrastructure and security investments in Marsabit County, stating they are critical to unlocking the region’s economic potential. Speaking at an education fund drive in Mugur E Serima, hosted by National Police Service Secretary Bernice Lemedeket, Wetang’ula highlighted the government’s progress in addressing insecurity while collaborating with local communities to foster peace. He stressed that marginalized areas must benefit equitably from national development programs, noting that improved roads and infrastructure would enhance trade, connect communities, and attract investment, while security improvements would enable residents to capitalize on the county’s economic opportunities.

Wetang’ula cited President William Ruto’s administration’s investments in roads, health, education, and infrastructure, including the Ksh2 trillion Lamu development and the Dangote Oil Refinery. He also announced the government’s plan to employ 24,000 additional teachers this year, with hardship areas prioritized to ensure educational equity. Reflecting on his role in finalizing the Rumuruti-Maralal Road during his tenure as Foreign Affairs Minister, he underscored the transformative impact of infrastructure projects in marginalised regions. ‘Economic projects must be implemented uniformly across Kenya so every community benefits from our resources,’ he said, advocating for community-driven security and development priorities.

Marsabit Governor Mohamud Mohamed Ali reiterated his administration’s commitment to education, having provided full scholarships to over 10,000 students since 2018. He emphasized that scholarship policies now prioritize inclusivity, transcending clan affiliations. Ali also endorsed President Ruto’s re-election, arguing that local political dynamics should not overshadow national leadership. Meanwhile, Laisamis MP Joseph Lekuton praised Wetang’ula’s support for marginalised communities, urging unity to advance regional development. Industrialisation Principal Secretary Dr. Juma Mukhwana highlighted the government’s economic growth initiatives, stating, ‘It is no longer about political correctness but harnessing resources for all Kenyans.’

The event also saw Lemedeket commend efforts to support the girl child, noting that communities in Marsabit have long been overlooked. She called for employment opportunities alongside infrastructure development, stressing the need to invest in human capital. Wetang’ula’s remarks, alongside contributions from regional leaders, underscored a shared vision for Marsabit’s future, balancing security, infrastructure, and equitable development to address historical marginalization and foster sustainable growth.
