Ugandan vocalist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Kyle Simbwa has been named Apple Music's Up Next artist for East Africa, joining a global roster of emerging talent selected by the platform's editors. The 27-year-old from Kasangati, a town near Kampala, is celebrated for blending '90s R&B, '80s synth-pop, A.O.R., and Disney TV influences with Afrobeats and Hip-Hop, creating a distinctive Afrobeat/Alté sound. Simbwa emphasized the significance of the recognition, stating, “Being selected for Up Next East Africa by Apple Music means a lot because I’m part of a generation of African artists building something uniquely ours.” His 2025 debut project Person and subsequent singles like “Mwana Gwe” and “East African Girl” have established him as a rising force in East African music, with live performances at events like Xpressions and Afro Urban alongside artists such as Mike Kayihura and Kohen Jaycee.
Simbwa’s creative process is deeply personal, with involvement in every stage of music production, from songwriting to engineering. This hands-on approach has enabled him to experiment and refine his sound, culminating in East African Summer, a seven-track EP released this year. The project explores themes of love, nightlife, and youth culture, blending Afrobeats, R&B, Hip-Hop, and alternative African sounds to capture the essence of East African summers. “2026 is about taking everything I’ve been building and pushing it further,” Simbwa said, expressing his ambition to expand his reach while representing Uganda and East Africa on a global scale. His work reflects a broader trend of East African artists gaining international visibility, with Apple Music’s Up Next program serving as a platform to amplify their voices.
The Up Next initiative, which has previously spotlighted global stars like Burna Boy, Tems, and Billie Eilish, aims to highlight artists “pushing creative boundaries and poised to reach a global audience.” Simbwa’s inclusion underscores the program’s focus on regional talent, offering him access to Apple Music’s curated playlists and global distribution networks. His selection follows a surge in East African music’s international appeal, driven by artists blending local traditions with global genres. For Simbwa, the opportunity represents both a personal milestone and a step toward elevating Ugandan music’s profile, as he continues to merge his Ugandan identity with a world of sonic influences. “I want people to hear my music, feel where I’m from, and see how far it can travel,” he said, echoing the aspirations of a new generation of East African creators.
Apple Music’s Up Next East Africa initiative, launched to support emerging artists in the region, has become a critical platform for diversifying global music narratives. Simbwa’s recognition highlights the growing recognition of East African artists in the international music industry, where their unique sounds and cultural storytelling are gaining traction. As he prepares to release new projects and expand his live performances, Simbwa’s journey reflects the broader potential of East African music to influence global trends. His success also raises questions about the sustainability of regional music ecosystems, as artists navigate the challenges of balancing local authenticity with global appeal. For now, Simbwa remains focused on his vision: “Mwebale nnyo,” he said, a Luganda phrase meaning “Let’s go,” signaling his determination to propel East African music forward.
