Kenyan heritage fashion house KikoRomeo will showcase its Ewala Spring/Summer 2024 collection at Moscow Fashion Week on October 1, presenting at the Central Exhibition Hall Manege in collaboration with Nairobi Fashion Week. Brian James Kihindas, Creative Director of Nairobi Fashion, called the opportunity 'unprecedented,' emphasizing its role in advancing Kenya’s fashion industry on the global stage. 'Securing a place on the official calendar of Moscow Fashion Week is an unprecedented opportunity for Kenya’s fashion industry,' Kihindas stated, highlighting the platform’s potential to 'unlock international markets' and elevate 'Kenya’s extraordinary design talent.'

The collection, which explores themes of identity and belonging through adornment, features rainfed organic cotton, handloom textiles, zero-waste garment construction, and hand-carved coconut-shell buttons. These materials underscore KikoRomeo’s commitment to locally sourced, artisan-crafted techniques. Founded in 1996 by Ann McCreath, the Nairobi-based brand has spent three decades blending African heritage with contemporary design. The name 'KikoRomeo' translates to 'Adam’s Apple' in Kiswahili, a nod to its cultural roots. McCreath, who will co-present the collection with her daughter Iona McCreath, described the Moscow showcase as an 'extraordinary opportunity' to introduce the brand to a global audience.

Moscow Fashion Week, running through October 1, features designers from multiple international markets. KikoRomeo’s participation aligns with broader efforts to position Kenyan fashion as a significant contributor to the global creative economy. The Ewala collection’s emphasis on sustainable practices and traditional craftsmanship reflects growing interest in ethical fashion, while its international debut highlights Kenya’s emerging role in global sartorial discourse. The event also underscores the strategic partnerships between African fashion houses and international platforms to amplify regional talent.

The collaboration between KikoRomeo and Moscow Fashion Week represents a pivotal moment for Kenya’s fashion sector, offering visibility to locally driven design while fostering cross-cultural exchange. By leveraging heritage techniques and contemporary innovation, the brand exemplifies how African fashion can compete on global stages. As the Ewala collection takes center stage in Moscow, it signals a broader shift toward recognizing Kenya’s creative output as a vital part of the international fashion landscape.
