President William Ruto commenced his Coast region tour on Saturday, marking the start of a multi-county initiative that includes the groundbreaking for the Sh2 trillion (US$16 billion) East Africa Refinery in Lamu. The project, a joint venture between the Kenyan government and Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, aims to process crude oil from Turkana County’s Lokichar fields and supply refined petroleum products across East and Central Africa. The refinery is projected to create over 500,000 jobs and enhance Kenya’s energy security, according to a State House statement. The tour, spanning Taita-Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, Tana River, and Lamu counties, focuses on resolving decades-old land disputes and advancing development projects. Over 200,000 title deeds were distributed across the region, with 94,175 issued in Kwale, 36,826 in Kilifi, 4,360 in Mombasa, and 22,770 in Lamu and Tana River counties. State House emphasized that the documents aim to provide formal land ownership, enabling beneficiaries to leverage their properties for economic activities.
