Kiambu County authorities, in collaboration with police, intercepted a large consignment of illicit alcohol in Kirigiti on Monday, marking a significant step in Phase II of the Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) aimed at curbing illegal liquor trade. The operation, led by Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) Caleb Nyongesa of Kiambu Municipality, targeted wine and spirits outlets identified through intelligence reports. The multi-agency effort focused on premises suspected of selling unlicensed alcohol, with officers seizing significant quantities of contraband and uncovering additional illicit products hidden in shops disguised as boutiques.
ACC Nyongesa confirmed that the targeted outlets had been under surveillance for weeks, with most operating without valid licenses. 'The shops have been on our radar for some time, and we have today found them with illicit products,' he stated. The crackdown is part of a sustained effort to disrupt the supply chain of illegal alcohol, which poses severe health risks and harms legitimate businesses. Authorities emphasized that the operation would extend beyond seizures, including investigations into the sources and distributors of the contraband. Several shop proprietors were arrested and face legal action, with officials vowing to intensify enforcement in the coming days.
Local residents and licensed traders welcomed the operation, citing its potential to protect consumers from hazardous substances and ensure fair competition.
