On Tuesday, September 10, 2019, the Daily Nation published an unusual job advert on its back page. A jobless Kenyan had spent a significant amount of money to place the advert, seeking employment as a Senior Executive or General Manager in Finance and Administration.

The job seeker, who chose to remain anonymous, boasted of over 20 years of experience in local and multinational companies. They claimed to be capable of managing various functions, including Administration, Finance, Sales, and Marketing.

‘Seeking employment Senior Executive/General Manager, Finance and Administration. I am available: I can manage Administration, Finance, Sales and Marketing functions. If interested in hiring me, please write so we can meet and have a chat to see if we are a fit. Please write to me at,’ reads part of the advert.

This is not the first time a jobless Kenyan has taken such an approach. Three weeks prior, another individual paid Sh130,000 for a similar advert, which also appeared on the back page of the Daily Nation. The applicant, Philip Sogoti Chepsat, had begged Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to hire him as his deputy.

While Sonko acknowledged the application, he stated that he would only fill the vacancy once legislation pending in Parliament on nomination and appointment of Deputy Governor is assented into law. He also expressed his intention to keep his promise to appoint a woman as his deputy.
