Published on September 10, 2019, Nairobi News reported that Kenyan Premier League sides Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards were facing a severe financial crisis.

The crisis was triggered by SportPesa's decision to pull out of its sponsorship deal with the two clubs, worth millions of shillings.

As a result, the clubs were unable to pay their players' salaries for the month of August, and many of the new signings had yet to receive their signing-on fees.

Basic amenities such as water were also lacking during training sessions, and the team buses were running low on fuel.

Adding to their woes, Gor Mahia was facing an estimated Sh10 million bill to honour their Caf Champions League first-round away match to Algeria's USM Alger.

In a bid to raise funds, the club's management called for a fundraiser, which was to be presided over by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

According to a statement by the club's management, 'It's true we don't have money. We have exhausted what we had and if we cannot get funds before this weekend, it will mean our CAF campaigns will end at this stage.'
