On September 8, 2019, Deputy President William Ruto took his political rivalry with AU Envoy Raila Odinga to the next level in Kirinyaga, warning Jubilee elected leaders against associating with the former premier.

Speaking at a church fundraiser in the county, Ruto cautioned Jubilee elected leaders planning to join Raila Odinga, saying they will face unspecified consequences.

“Jubilee MPs should not allow themselves to be drawn into the referendum debate by Odinga. What is important this time is to initiate development projects which can benefit Kenyans. Any Jubilee leader who will engage Raila in his scheme will face the wrath of the people,” Ruto said.

He claimed Raila was not giving Jubilee a chance to implement its development agenda due to his constant clamor for constitutional changes, something he says is a distraction.

” All that you are currently seeing is all a distraction by the opposition. We know their intention. We shall not be discouraged by negative talks by our opponents, we shall work hard to transform the lives of all Kenyans,” he stated.

During the fundraiser, DP Ruto also used the chance to bash the BBI Task force plus its activities, calling it a doomed voyage which will spectacularly fail.

He said Kenyans were not interested in the referendum debate, adding the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) team should take views from Raila since it was only him who appeared to have a problem with the current constitution.
