On August 3, 2019, a tragic incident occurred in Isongo Village, Mumias East sub-county, Kakamega County, where Sylviah Akhabukuyi lost her life in a brutal attack by her husband, Nicholas Awili Lukoko.
According to court documents, the deceased had arrived home from a nearby shopping centre, where she had gone to sell milk from their family cow. Her husband, who was anxiously waiting for her to bring home the proceeds, picked a quarrel with her when she refused to reveal how much she had made.
The dispute escalated into a physical confrontation, and Lukoko reportedly picked a club and attacked his wife, hitting her hard on different parts of the body before she fell down unconscious. A nearby doctor who was called pronounced Akhabukuyi dead, and officers from Mumias Police Station were called to pick the body.
Following the incident, Lukoko was arrested and taken into custody on August 5, 2019. He has since been detained at Kakamega Main Prison, awaiting his prosecution at the High Court on August 27, 2019.
A post-mortem report conducted by the Chief Pathologist at Kakamega County General Hospital, Dixon Mchana, revealed that the cause of death was internal bleeding secondary to blunt abdominal trauma.
