Published on September 9, 2019, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has requested the Teachers' Service Commission (TSC) to triple the salaries of teachers within the next two years.

The proposed collective bargaining agreement (CBA) for 2021-2023 aims to replace the current CBA (2017-2021) and increase the basic salary of the lowest paid teacher from Sh27,195 to Sh65,268.

According to the agreement, senior principals should earn Sh260,132, principals Sh230,000, and Secondary Teacher I and Senior Teacher I should be paid Sh129,462 as basic salary.

Additionally, the union proposes annual increments from July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2023, and a 50% adjustment in house allowances effective from July 1, 2021.

On risk allowance, Knut wants all teachers handling technical and science subjects to benefit at the rate of 10% of their basic salary.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) is proposing a salary increase of between 30 and 70% in the 2021-2025 CBA, with the salary of the lowest paid teacher increasing to Sh36,985.
