Kenya: Mombasa Magistrate Edgar Kagoni, 3 Others Arrested Over Sh30 Million Heroin Exhibit

On September 9, 2019, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested Mombasa Principal Magistrate Edgar Kagoni Matsigulu and three court officials for mishandling a significant amount of heroin.

The arrest came after an investigation into the reckless handling of exhibits at the Mombasa Law Courts in July 2019. The officials allegedly lost approximately 10 kilograms of heroin valued at Sh30 million and cash of various currency valued at over Sh600,000.

"The magistrate and the three other court officials are all in lawful custody awaiting to be charged on Monday," said George Kinoti, the DCI director.

The officials were booked at different police stations: Magistrate Kagoni at Kilindini Port Police Station, Abdalla Awadh Abubakar at Makupa police station, Lawrence Thoya Bayan at Nyali police station, and Onesmus Miinda Momanyi at ICD Police station in Nairobi.
