On September 9, 2019, a hit-and-run accident occurred at the main entrance of Multimedia University in Nairobi, leaving a first-year student seriously wounded and admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital.
The incident sparked outrage among the university's students, who accused the police of inaction and decided to take matters into their own hands.
Students went on a rampage, blocking Magadi Road and clashing with the police. The situation turned violent, with the police lobbing teargas canisters at the students, who retaliated by hurling stones at the officers.
Motorists using the busy road were left stranded as the police attempted to disperse the protesters. The students also claimed that the crew of Ongataline matatu sacco had been harassing and overcharging them, which added to their grievances.
One of the protesting students warned Ongataline, saying, 'We would like to warn Ongataline that this is the last time they will be harassing us. You cannot tell us the fare is 50 bob then later change to 100 bob and if we refuse to pay the 100 bob you make us alight the vehicle without reaching our destination.'
