Kenyan youth are increasingly pursuing maritime careers aboard international cruise liners, leveraging global travel opportunities while building professional experience. The trend has gained momentum since 2018, when Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) partnered with Kenya's government to revive the Kenya National Shipping Line (KNSL), creating pathways for young Kenyans to work on cruise vessels.

Getrude Wakesho, 24, a Mombasa resident, works aboard the MSC Seashore as an assistant waitress after starting as a buffet attendant. She credited her catering education and practical training in Mombasa's hotels for preparing her for the role. Wakesho described the challenges of crossing the Atlantic Ocean during her first contract, emphasizing the importance of emergency drills and safety training at the Bandari Maritime Academy.

George James Tawa, a Kilifi resident, has worked aboard MSC vessels since 2019. With over a decade of culinary experience, he rose to head of department after being recruited as a cook. Tawa highlighted the cultural exchange with international crews and the support provided during personal crises, such as when he returned home to bury his father. He noted that cruise ship employment offers financial stability, global exposure, and benefits like free accommodation and meals.

The industry faced significant disruptions during the 2020-2022 pandemic, with 39% of seafarers losing jobs, particularly in hotel departments. Despite recovery efforts, challenges persist. Industry stakeholders point to Kenya's underdeveloped marketing of its Mombasa Port cruise terminal as a barrier to attracting more liners, even though infrastructure exists to accommodate larger vessels.
