On September 21, the Kabarak Half Marathon will take place from Mogotio to Kabarak University, aiming to raise funds for bright needy students in society. The event, which has Gideon Moi as its patron, is themed 'Crossing the Equator to support Needy Students.'
Organizers are expecting a large number of runners to register before the deadline on Saturday. According to James Cheruiyot, the Race Coordinator, they have already registered several top athletes, and the turnout is increasing daily.
“Most runners are used to rushing for registration at the eleventh hour. However, the process is still on till this weekend,” Cheruiyot told Standard Sports.
The 21km road race will be run entirely on tarmac throughout the route, similar to last year's event. The organizers are targeting to raise Sh12 million from various sponsors, including Moi High School Kabarak, which has already injected Sh1 million.
Other sponsors include Kabarak University Enterprises (Sh500,000), Rift Valley Technology Farm (Sh500,000), Safaricom Limited (Sh200,000), Kenol Kobil (Sh150,000), and Neat Hygiene Limited (Sh100,000). Additional donations are expected from Egerton Sacco (Sh100,000), Mogotio Plantation Limited (Sh125,000), and Nation Media Group (Sh125,000).
Defending men's champion Abraham Kiptum of Kapsabet and women's defending champion Valery Jemeli are among the elite runners expected to participate. Marathon World record holder Eliud Kipchoge, Mary Keitany, and Vivian Cheruiyot are the event's ambassadors.
