On September 8, 2019, a cargo ship, the Golden Ray, capsized in St. Simons Sound near Brunswick, Georgia, leaving four crew members missing.
The U.S. Coast Guard reported that the ship was on its side in the sound, with smoke visible in photos shared by the agency.
A rescue operation was underway, with a coalition of eight Coast Guard units, including two helicopter crews, rescuing 20 of the 24 people on board.
However, the rescue efforts were suspended due to the ship being deemed 'too risky' for further operations, according to Coast Guard Charleston Sector commander Capt. John Reed.
Reed stated, 'Once they have stabilized the vessel, [they] will try to go in to get the four who remain on board.'
The Golden Ray, which carries vehicles for a company based in South Korea, had previously passed waypoints in Jacksonville, Florida, and Cape Town before capsizing off the coast of Georgia.
The cause of the accident remains unclear, according to the Coast Guard.
