Standoff at TV Station as Ndindi Nyoro Refuses to Leave Fearing Arrest

On September 8, 2019, a dramatic scene unfolded at the Royal Media Services (RMS) offices in Hurlingham, Nairobi, as Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro refused to leave the premises, fearing arrest.

According to reports, Nyoro was at the back of an interview when he learned that authorities were waiting to apprehend him outside. He thus decided not to step outside in a bid to avoid arrest.

Speaking on behalf of Nyoro, Kandara MP Alice Wahome, who accompanied her under-fire counterpart, termed the impending arrest an act of impunity. Wahome insisted that arresting Nyoro at night went against ethics and urged police to write to the Speaker of the National Assembly to warrant a proper arrest.

Other Members of Parliament who made way to the station to show solidarity included Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwa and Dagoretti lawmaker John Kiarie. Ichungwa stated, 'We must challenge the Inspector General not to allow the police to be used to persecute politicians. Politicians should be allowed to support who they want. We will spend the night here. We will present Nyoro to any police station in the daytime.'

The MP's woes began when he dismissed his counterpart Maina Kamanda during a church fund raiser at the Gitui Catholic church. Nyoro, a strong affiliate to the so-called Tangatanga faction, was discontent with Kamanda being the one to coordinate the event and made his feelings known.

There was also the feeling that the Kieleweke brigade led by Kamanda had come to further their agenda in Kiharu constituency. Because of the physical altercation that ensued during the church function, Nyoro was wanted by police over alleged incitement but managed to avoid arrest.
