On Sunday, a church fundraiser in Murang'a County turned into a battleground for the Tanga Tanga and Kieleweke factions of the Jubilee Party. The clash involved MPs Ndindi Nyoro and Maina Kamanda, who are affiliated to the rival factions.
According to sources, Mr. Nyoro and his team stormed Gitui Catholic Church, where Mr. Kamanda was the chief guest, and attempted to disrupt the fundraiser. The Tanga Tanga team reportedly arrived late, with Mr. Kamanda already speaking and making introductions.
Mr. Nyoro demanded to be the one to introduce the guests, claiming he was the area MP. However, Mr. Kamanda declined, stating that he had been invited as the chief guest and not Mr. Nyoro.
The two MPs exchanged words, with the situation worsening when County Police Commander Josephat Kinyua stood up and headed to the podium. Mr. Nyoro's supporters turned rowdy, thinking he was being arrested.
Despite the chaos, the situation was eventually contained, and Mr. Kamanda gave out his donation of Ksh.500,000, while President Uhuru Kenyatta donated Ksh.1 million.
Outside the church, Mr. Kamanda and Mr. Nyoro addressed the press and residents, each placing blame on the other for the chaos.
