On September 8, 2019, England midfielder Danny Drinkwater found himself in trouble after being attacked by thugs in Manchester.

According to reports, Drinkwater was making advances on the girlfriend of Scunthorpe United defender Kgosi Ntlhe, sparking an altercation with the League Two player.

Drinkwater, who is currently on loan with Burnley from Chelsea, was said to have been caught up in the mayhem while enjoying a night out in Manchester last weekend, hours after his side's 3-0 defeat to Liverpool.

It is believed that after being moved by security, Drinkwater was set upon by a gang of six men who attacked him with a blunt object, leaving him with torn ankle ligaments, a black eye, severely swollen forehead, and a cut cheek.

A source told The Sun that at one point, Drinkwater was curled up in a ball on the ground as the attackers repeatedly jumped up and down on his ankle.

"They knew he was a Premier League star and it was his livelihood. There was blood everywhere, and it was all incredibly nasty," the source added.

Drinkwater's tribulations come just months after being slapped with a driving ban and ordered to complete community service over a drink-driving crash which left two women hurt.
