The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has uncovered unauthorized voter relocations within its system, with 70 days remaining before the August 9 General Election. A preliminary review of the voters’ register revealed transfers between polling stations that violated procedural guidelines, according to the commission.
IEBC chairperson Wafula Wanyonyi Chebukati stated on May 30 that the commission is investigating the issue, emphasizing legal consequences for involved staff. He explained that transfers require formal requests and documentation, with registration officers updating the register accordingly. "Cases of transfers without voter consent will be thoroughly examined," Chebukati said, adding that affected voters would be reassigned to their correct polling stations if irregularities are confirmed.
The findings come as reports emerged of technical issues during candidate screening, causing delays in regions like Garissa, Siaya, and Kisii. Some candidates faced over three-hour waits to submit documents on the second day of the process.
Human rights activist Okiya Okoiti Omtatah called for addressing systemic vulnerabilities to prevent electoral fraud, following similar appeals from Azimio La Umoja's Martha Karua for transparent elections.
