On September 7, 2019, a daring act of bravery saved the day in Rwika market, Mbeere, Embu County.
When a fuel tanker caught fire at the petrol station, driver James Mugo, 50, sprang into action, driving the burning vehicle to a nearby forest to prevent a potential disaster.
The tanker, carrying 8,000 litres of fuel, was emptying fuel when it suddenly burst into flames, prompting Mr Mugo to act swiftly.
With the market densely populated, Mr Mugo risked his life to save others, driving the tanker to a safe distance before jumping out and fleeing for his life.
County Commissioner Galgallo Abdullahi congratulated Mr Mugo and presented him with a Sh10,000 reward for his bravery.
‘The driver acted boldly and I must reward him,’ said Mr Abdullahi, praising Mr Mugo’s quick thinking and selfless act.
Mr Mugo, a father of two, was overwhelmed with emotion as he received the reward, saying, ‘I never expected this would happen to me. I’m excited.’
