Kenya will observe a period of mourning for former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, who passed away on September 6, 2019, in Singapore at the age of 95.
As a mark of respect, the Kenyan flag will fly at half-mast from Saturday, September 7, until Monday, September 9, at State House, all public buildings, and military posts.
President Uhuru Kenyatta described Mugabe as an African hero and friend of Kenya, saying he will be fondly missed and remembered for his role in Africa's liberation struggle.
According to President Kenyatta, Kenya and Zimbabwe enjoy strong cordial relations, linked to their shared struggle against colonialism. Mugabe maintained close relationships with Kenya during his tenure as President, visiting the country on several occasions, including the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development in 2016.
Earlier on Friday, President Kenyatta, his Deputy William Ruto, and ODM leader Raila Odinga sent messages of condolence to Mugabe's family and the Zimbabwean nation.
President Kenyatta said, 'On behalf of the Government and the People of Kenya and on my own behalf, I wish to convey our deepest sympathies and condolences to the Government and the People of Zimbabwe following the death of former President Robert Mugabe.'
Deputy President Ruto added, 'Condolences to the people of Zimbabwe following the passing on of former President Robert Mugabe. Mugabe was a revolutionary freedom fighter and a liberation hero.'
ODM leader Raila Odinga said, 'I wish to pass my condolences to the people of Zimbabwe following the death of their founding Father, H.E. Robert Mugabe.'
