On September 5, 2019, Raila Odinga left the country for a three-day trip to Ethiopia, leaving behind a power vacuum in the ODM primaries in Kibra.

The primaries, scheduled for September 7, 2019, are expected to be fiercely contested by 10 candidates vying for the party's ticket.

According to Raila's spokesperson, Dennis Onyango, the former Prime Minister is attending a meeting in Addis Ababa as a representative of the African Union.

With Raila's absence, the ODM primaries in Kibra have become a highly anticipated event, with the police assuring that there will be adequate security measures in place.
