On September 6, 2019, Citizen TV reporter Stephen Letoo's village home in Narok county was attacked by unknown assailants. The attack came after area leaders, including a governor, threatened the journalist for his reporting on the Mau issue, claiming it was biased against Deputy President William Ruto.
Letoo had been reporting on how the Mau forest had been encroached by settlers, affecting people downstream. This had caused public outrage. Following the threats on his life, Kenyans took to social media, urging security agencies to provide Letoo with protection.
Letoo himself took to Twitter, stating, 'My Rural home in Enooretet village in Kilgoris constituency Narok county was last night ATTACKED by unknown people.'
As the situation unfolded, Kenyans called for the relevant authorities to ensure the safety of the journalist.
