Published on September 6, 2019, a former university student shared their story of working for a leading insurer, where they discovered rampant unethical business practices and overworking.
They felt trapped, living a lie, and wondered if they should stay put and be party to the unethical practices or challenge the status quo.
However, they realized that there are consequences for speaking out, but leaving with their head high was a better option than complicity.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case in our country, where we have witnessed shocking unethical practices, from harmful products to exploitation of employees.
Employees have a choice to either keep quiet or speak out, and it's their conscience that should guide them to raise their concerns using internal channels or collective pressure.
They could also use anonymous channels, employee engagement surveys, or drop an anonymous letter to external parties to highlight these malpractices.
But by remaining silent, they are equally guilty, and it's essential to remember that what goes around comes back around.
Speaking out may save many, but the best reward will be a clear conscience.
