National Assembly Majority Leader Amos Kimunya withdrew the Kenya Revenue Authority (Amendment) Bill following a contentious debate over its proposed rebranding to Kenya Revenue Service.
The legislation aimed to amend the Kenya Revenue Authority Act, 1995, by altering the agency's name to enhance public perception and tax compliance through improved branding efforts.
Garissa Township MP Aden Duale introduced an amendment to safeguard the positions of current Commissioners and Board members, arguing that the name change would create a separate legal entity requiring their resignation.
"We must ensure the current Commissioner General and Board remain in office until their terms expire," Duale stated, emphasizing the need for transitional protections. However, Kimunya disputed this, asserting that the original bill already included job security provisions.
After failing to resolve the disagreement, Kimunya invoked Standing Order 140 to withdraw the bill, citing the need to avoid prolonged debate on a fundamental amendment. The 12th Parliament is set to adjourn indefinitely following the session.
