President Uhuru Kenyatta's 2020 assertions about his administration's achievements were independently evaluated by The Nation, revealing both verified progress and discrepancies in key metrics.

Infrastructure Expansion

Kenyatta claimed his government built more tarmac roads than all previous administrations combined, citing 11,000 kilometers constructed during his tenure. Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows the tarmac road network grew from 9,700 kilometers in December 2012 to 21,826 kilometers by 2021, though some projects predated his presidency. The 12,126-kilometer increase during his time included infrastructure initiated under Mwai Kibaki's administration.

Educational Reforms

The president asserted a 100% primary-to-secondary school transition rate and a 1:1 textbook ratio. Official records reveal the transition rate fell to 78.5% in 2021, the lowest in five years, down from 91% in 2020. While the textbook ratio reached 97% coverage in 2021, the claim of universal 1:1 distribution was inaccurate.

Diaspora Remittances

Kenyatta stated diaspora remittances increased tenfold since 2012, but government data shows a 4.5-fold rise from Sh98.85 billion in 2012 to Sh413.3 billion in 2021. The growth, driven by expanded mobile money networks, surpassed traditional exports as Kenya's top foreign exchange earner by 2021.

Land Registry Reforms

The digital Ardhi Sasa land registry, launched in 2021, reduced transaction times from six months to 48 hours. However, less than 10% of 40,000 targeted properties were uploaded in Nairobi, raising concerns about implementation challenges and resistance from entrenched land interests.

Vocational Education Growth

Kenyatta highlighted a 435% increase in Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVet) institutions, from 52 in 2013 to 238 by 2021. Official figures show 2,396 TVet institutions by 2021, reflecting broader growth beyond his tenure, including 705 institutions in 2012.
