Kenya's security agencies arrested Badru Abdul Aziz Saleh, a suspected international drug trafficker wanted by the United States for heroin smuggling, in Liboi, Garissa County, while he attempted to cross into Somalia.

The arrest followed a public campaign by Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti and US Chargé d’Affaires Eric Kneedler, who displayed Saleh's image and that of accomplice Abdi Hussein Ahmed, offering a Sh100 million reward for each suspect's capture. Saleh is linked to the Kromah Network, an international syndicate involved in rhino horn, ivory, and drug trafficking across Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, and Senegal.

Although Ahmed remains at large, the operation highlights successful cross-border cooperation in combating transnational crime. The US Embassy credited a public tip for Saleh's arrest, emphasizing the role of citizen engagement in law enforcement efforts.

UNODC data shows rising heroin, cocaine, and stimulant trafficking through East Africa, with Mombasa and Dar es Salaam ports serving as key entry points. The region faces challenges including commercial flight routes from Asia and the Middle East, alongside corruption among port and airport officials.

The case underscores the potential for effective crime-fighting when authorities prioritize collaboration and public participation, according to the report.
