The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has approved Sirisia MP John Waluke and Kapseret candidate Oscar Sudi to contest their parliamentary seats, despite unresolved legal matters affecting both candidates.

Sudi, whose academic credentials face judicial scrutiny, received his nomination certificate from Kapseret Return Officer Ms. Mildred Wachiye. She confirmed he met IEBC requirements for United Democratic Alliance party candidacy, noting independent candidates were rejected for failing to submit the minimum 1,000 voter signatures.

Waluke, convicted in 2020 for a Sh297 million maize board scandal, remains under a seven-year sentence but was released on bail in September 2022. High Court Justice John Onyiego set a Sh10 million cash bail for Waluke and Sh20 million for co-accused Grace Wakhungu pending appeal.

Waluke's clearance by Sirisia Returning Officer Isaac Ruto sparked celebration among local residents. The MP claimed constitutional protections under Article 59(3) shield him from disqualification, vowing to challenge opponents in the August 9 polls. He announced plans to run for Bungoma governor in 2027 and urged voters to support Azimio alliance candidate Raila Odinga.

Waluke highlighted Odinga's commitment to reviving the Malakisi cotton ginnery and Western region sugar factories, citing the opposition leader's recent campaign visit to the area. His remarks followed reports of a large crowd welcoming Odinga during a Sunday rally.
