The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has outlined a four-phase plan to complete the 748-kilometer Isiolo-Wajir-Mandera road, a critical infrastructure project in the North Eastern Region. The first phase, involving the 200-kilometer Isiolo-Kula Mawe-Madogashe corridor, is set to begin in June 2022 after a five-month delay from its original January start date.

The project, described as a transformative initiative, will be implemented in four distinct segments: the Isiolo-Kula Mawe-Madogashe route, followed by Modogashe-Samatar-Wajir, Wajir-Tarbaj-Kutulo-Elwak, and finally Elwak-Rhamu-Mandera. Funding for all phases has been secured, with the entire corridor expected to be fully tarmacked by 2028.

Upon completion, the road will enhance transportation networks, improve access to social services for over 3 million residents, and address persistent fiber connectivity challenges through integrated optic fiber installation. The highway will also establish a transnational link between Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti, reinforcing regional trade and mobility.
