MCSK CEO Ezekiel Mutua has denied allegations linking his leadership to Nonini's 2022 contract termination, emphasizing that the artist's exit followed procedures initiated prior to his appointment. The dispute involves a 2019 image accompanying the original report, which depicted Mutua during his tenure at the Music Copyright Society of Kenya.
"The process began in February, and I joined MCSK at the end of March," Mutua explained, attributing Nonini's decision to relocate to the United States and join a local collective management organization (CMO) there. He clarified that Kenyan artists retain the right to exit MCSK by adhering to formal termination protocols.
"Leaving is akin to switching Sacco memberships - it's a personal choice driven by perceived better opportunities," Mutua said. Nonini, however, disputed this, claiming MCSK failed to fulfill its core responsibilities. The artist posted on social media: "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. #Mgenge2ru," referencing the hashtag in his critique.
The controversy underscores tensions between artists and copyright management bodies, with Nonini's case highlighting debates about organizational accountability and artist autonomy.
