Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the Wiper Party, has finalized a pact to rejoin the Azimio La Umoja coalition, securing five ministerial positions in the process. The agreement, confirmed through a virtual meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta, includes the Energy, Tourism, Water, and Health ministries, alongside the foreign affairs cabinet secretary role.
The deal, reportedly sealed on Monday, excludes the infrastructure ministry, which Musyoka had previously sought. The arrangement is contingent on Azimio forming a government following the August 9 elections. A source cited by Nairobi Leo noted the coalition’s efforts to consolidate support ahead of the polls.
The agreement followed Kenyatta’s meeting with Sierra Leone’s president and preceded Raila Odinga’s attendance at MP William Kamoti’s funeral. During the burial, Odinga conveyed condolences to Kenyatta, signaling the deal’s apparent resolution. Musyoka’s party has urged him to prioritize coalition unity over personal ambitions, as he prepares for presidential candidacy formalities with the IEBC.
Previous reports from 2016 highlighted Musyoka’s political maneuvering, including a 2022 decision to withdraw from a coalition bid. The current pact marks a strategic shift in his political trajectory.
