Nairobi Regional Commander Kang’ethe Thuku enforced mandatory face masks for Madaraka Day celebrations following a 4.4% increase in Covid-19 positivity rates, according to a May 31, 2022, directive. The requirement applies to the Uhuru Gardens event on June 1, 2022, where President Uhuru Kenyatta will preside.

Thuku emphasized that attendees without masks would be barred from the gathering, aligning with Health Principal Secretary Susan Mochache's warnings about the virus remaining a significant threat. Mochache urged continued vaccination and mask-wearing during a World No Tobacco Day address, citing recent case increases.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe had previously lifted mask mandates in public spaces on March 11, 2022, after expert consultations. However, the Nairobi Regional Commander's order contradicted this, citing rising transmission rates. The National Police Service also issued traffic advisories for roads near Uhuru Gardens, including the Southern Bypass and Langata Road.

The event will feature Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio and his wife, alongside Kenyatta. A Mashemeji Derby between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards is scheduled, with the winner receiving Ksh1 million. Kenyatta plans to distribute Ksh24 million in awards, as promised on May 8, 2022.

Notably, Kenyatta participated in Madaraka Day proceedings in Kisumu on June 1, 2021, as captured in a photo accompanying the original report.
