Defender Marcelo has officially retired from Real Madrid after cementing his legacy as the club's top-scoring defender, scoring 25 goals across all competitions. This achievement surpassed Paco Gento's record of six European Cup titles won during the 1950s and 1960s.
Marcelo's final goal came during Real Madrid's 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the 2022 UEFA Champions League final in Paris, France. The 34-year-old Brazilian, who joined Real Madrid in 2007 at age 19, played 500 matches across all competitions, winning 18 major trophies including five La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League crowns.
"This was my final match with Real Madrid. Scoring in the UEFA final was a dream come true," Marcelo said, reflecting on his 14th UEFA Champions League title. His career coincided with the departure of legendary defender Roberto Carlos, who moved to Turkey in 2007 to join Fenerbahce.
Throughout his tenure, Marcelo secured multiple domestic and international titles, including La Liga, UEFA Champions League, and European Super Cups. His final season saw him play 18 matches across all competitions before his retirement.
