The Nairobi County Director of Communications, Beryl Okundi, confirmed 10 officials had been arrested and charged in connection with the controversy. A five-day investigation was ordered to review CCTV footage from May 29, focusing on whether separate queues existed and if discriminatory policies were in place.
Alchemist Bar issued a statement denying the claims, explaining that all customers used a single entrance. The club acknowledged a 2018 apology after similar allegations, citing a Twitter exchange where management addressed concerns about entry policies.
Club's Defense and Past Controversies ¶
The venue stated that a video showing segregated lines misrepresented events. Security had allowed a group to re-enter through the exit to avoid crowding the main entrance, the club said. It emphasized there was no policy of segregation, noting that its 2018 apology came after a similar dispute.
Despite the explanation, critics referenced the 2016 incident and ongoing concerns about discriminatory practices. The club reiterated its commitment to inclusivity, stating it had always welcomed diverse patrons since opening.
