African Development Bank (AfDB) President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina concluded a four-day mission in Nairobi focused on assessing infrastructure projects, including the Kenol-Sagana-Marua highway upgrade. The initiative, part of Kenya's Trans-Africa Highway network, aims to enhance regional connectivity and economic integration.
Financed through a tripartite agreement between AfDB, the Kenyan government, and the Africa Growing Together Fund, the project involves transforming an 84km single-lane road into a dual-carriageway. AfDB contributes $191 million, while Kenya provides Sh6.1 billion and the Africa Growing Together Fund adds Sh3.9 billion.
The upgrade is projected to reduce travel time by 26% and lower transportation costs by 35% along the northern corridor. AfDB's East Africa Director General Nnenna Nwabufo emphasized the project's role in improving livelihoods, expanding cross-border markets, and boosting rural productivity in the region.
Expected to be fully completed by 2024, the highway connects Nairobi to central, upper eastern, and northern Kenya. It includes complementary infrastructure like a hospital trauma center, bus parks, and modern market facilities. The first 36km segment from Kenol to Sagana is slated for completion by July 2023.
During his visit, Adesina met with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury and Planning Amb. Ukur Yatani, and international development partners to discuss collaboration opportunities.
